THRIVING AT 90
People half her age envy Miriam Gerber’s active lifestyle.
“I go to yoga class every Saturday and then I rush home to eat lunch because I have to play Canasta then I go for dinner and then most Saturdays I go to a movie.” – Miriam Gerber, resident of The Watermark at Logan Square
MEET MIRIAM GERBER, WHO FOLLOWED HER FRIENDS INTO A LIFESTYLE SHE LOVES.
You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. (All quotes contained in this post are excerpts from an interview conducted with Miriam Gerber on Tuesday, May 5th, 2015. To read the full, un-edited transcript, please click here.)
A resident of The Watermark at Logan Square for more than five years now, Miriam is always on the go. She keeps her car parked in the garage but says she rarely uses it. Sometimes, she visits her old neighborhood in Roxborough where she lived in the same apartment building for 39 years. The people at the bank there still remember her by name and it’s no wonder because she’s so upbeat and personable. At The Watermark, you’ll often find Miriam working in the thrift store, attending lectures or doing yoga.
IT’S NO SECRET
People like Miriam have been thriving in retirement communities for years. You’d thrive, too, if you had everything you could ever want or need at your fingertips: Built in friendships, a calendar chock full of fun things to do and caring associates who love to see you smile. How easy is moving to a retirement community? For Miriam, it was easy and fun, because she moved in with six of her friends plus her own sister. Regardless of your age, whether you’re a couple, a group of friends or flying solo, the best time to explore your best future living options is now. “I’m very happy here because I love the people. I love the service. The people that work here are very nice and it’s just a great place to live.” – Miriam Gerber
BUILT IN SUPPORT
It’s true that a retirement community offers built in friendships and support and that statement never rang more true than in Miriam’s case. When she moved to The Watermark in 2009, she literally brought along her own friends – six of them as well as her sister! As good friends and neighbors from Henry Avenue in Roxborough, these eight vibrant ladies came as a package deal. “I moved Friday morning and my sister moved Friday afternoon and that evening all eight of us ate dinner. And for the longest time we were known as the popular eight people.” – Miriam Gerber
EASY AND CONVENIENT
“I felt this is where I wanted to be, with my friends. It was great because I had my card games, I had my friends, I had everything that I needed. I really don’t miss anything because I have two sons that live, like, ten or twelve minutes away from here so it makes it very easy for me and I love living here. The convenience is great, the people are great. I’m very, very happy here. And being close to my children of course makes it much easier. Don’t wait to move now because it’s a wonderful, wonderful place.” – Miriam Gerber
