WHY LEAVE THE FUTURE TO CHANCE?
Research and planning can make life the very best it can be.
“I’m a believer in making choices when you have the freedom to make the choices.” – George McKeon, resident of The Watermark at Logan Square
MEET GEORGE MCKEON, WHOSE THOROUGH AND TIMELY RESEARCH LED HIM TO THE WATERMARK.
You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. (All quotes contained in this post are excerpts from an interview conducted with George McKeon on Monday, February 1st, 2016. To read the full, un-edited transcript, please click here.)
After 20 years in Connecticut, George and Joyce McKeon returned home to the Philadelphia suburbs. They lived at Foxfield for seven years before relocating closer to their daughter in Center City. They looked at Atria but found the broader spectrum of living choices offered by The Watermark better answered all “what if” scenarios. Their beautifully remodeled apartment on the 23rd floor has a view of the Delaware River and Benjamin Franklin Bridge. They enjoy going out for walks together and they also take advantage of group outings to cultural events, like concerts at the Kimmel Center. George also likes to read and is involved in resident council.
YOU NEVER KNOW
If crystal balls worked, you’d know exactly what the future holds. Since they don’t, it’s prudent to ask important questions, like: What if you or your spouse needs more care than you can provide for each other? If something happened to one of you, could the other not only manage but actually thrive? Researching your retirement living options is a bit like doing your homework. The earlier you get it done, the more time you’ll have for fun. Why procrastinate? “Do it while you have the choices. Don’t wait until circumstances rob you of those choices. We got a chance to pick the apartment we wanted. We had time to wait for them to do the renovations that we wanted. All those kind of things all contribute to the quality of life here. We now have a place that we’re very comfortable in.” – George McKeon
LOOK AT YOUR LEISURE
George and Joyce took their time researching options from the suburbs to Center City. They even had time to customize the apartment they selected so it would be just right. As a result, from the day they moved into The Watermark in February 2015, they felt they made the right choice. “We were living in a single house in the midst of the 55+ community. But I realized that my wife would not be able to stay in a single house by herself and so I decided that it would be good for us to get into a more structured environment.” – George McKeon
Procrastinating to the last minute never pays. Planning does. “I realized that this is going to be our home for hopefully a lot of years and so we wanted it the way we wanted it. And so we talked to the plant services guy here and had some renovations done, took out the tub in the bathroom and put in a walk-in shower, rebuilt the kitchen including taking out a wall. Stuff that you can’t do over a weekend, stuff that you need planning and whatever to do.” – George McKeon
