STAYING A STEP OR TWO AHEAD
By anticipating the changes that life inevitably brings, you can better meet the challenges. Denying the inevitable doesn’t make the challenges go away, so face them head on.
“We decided that we weren’t going to keep being healthy and when something happened we wanted to be at a place where there was someone to turn to. That really has proved to be a blessing.” – Bernie Litman, resident of The Watermark at Logan Square
MEET BERNIE LITMAN, A PHILADELPHIA NATIVE WHO IS PROUD TO CALL THE WATERMARK HOME.
You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. (All quotes contained in this post are excerpts from an interview conducted with Bernie Litman on Thursday, February 5th, 2015. To read the full, un-edited transcript, please click here.)
Bernie is a die-hard Eagles fan. He’s also an avid Bridge player. For 35 years, Bernie and his wife, Pearl, lived at Beaver Hill Condominium in Jenkintown. Call it a premonition or call it practical thinking, Bernie had a feeling last year that it was time to move to a more supportive living environment. They looked all over before narrowing their search to The Watermark. Bernie liked that it didn’t require a large upfront fee. By March of 2014, they’d completed their move. We have a lot of kids and they were a help and they recommended a woman who specializes in helping you move, helping you decide what to throw away and that was very helpful. – Bernie Litman
TRADE ‘I SHOULD HAVE’ FOR ‘GLAD I DID’
The dread of moving is real, but it’s better than staying put. Chances are the longer you put off moving to a retirement community, the harder your move will be. It might even become impossible and then what? Life’s so much more enjoyable in the right community. Plus, moving can be easier than you imagine, when you have the right help. Trade the dread of moving for the feeling of accomplishment you’ll get when you step into your new residence and begin your next exciting chapter within a supportive community of friends. “You just sort of know when the time is coming. You just don’t feel comfortable where you are.” – Bernie Litman
Shortly after moving in, Pearl landed in the hospital, conveniently located near The Watermark. Later, she made use of The Springs, the on-site rehabilitation center and later, hospice services. Bernie was relieved that the services Pearl needed were close at hand. Meanwhile, Bernie’s own needs were supported with convenient dining and a fitness gym also just an elevator ride away. “That’s one of the things that show up when you’re in a place like Watermark, that if you do become ill, there’s a nurse that you can call and hospitals that are convenient… So much is going on, it takes a load off your mind that you don’t have to start looking for a place to go. People here have been very supportive.” – Bernie Litman
A WISE MOVE
Bernie’s quality of life certainly would have suffered had he not moved to The Watermark when he did. As it turns out, he’s made the very best of a difficult situation. To de-stress he plays Bridge, takes in a movie or explores the sights. “In Philadelphia, all the things that I never got around to, I’m starting to do that now. Museums, there’s a lot to see in downtown Philadelphia. You can get by nicely without a car.” – Bernie Litman
