We have been experiencing a hot and humid summer here in Philadelphia, but that hasn’t stopped our residents from getting out and about this month! The month of July has brought some exciting trips and interesting encounters with various art forms. On Tuesday, July 24th a group of twelve residents went to experience the annual Bucks County Quilt Show. They were treated to an awesome display of color and workmanship with more than 100 quilts, crafted by Bucks County quilters. They enjoyed the “So You Want to Make a Quilt” display, which showed them the construction of a quilt from the planning stage to the final stitches. They also enjoyed the “Scrap Yard” shadowbox, which showcased the imaginative items that can be made with leftover fabric. It was truly a spectacular show filled with colorful quilts, whimsical patterns, and lots of information about the history and tradition of quilting. After the show, the group ventured across the street to enjoy a delicious lunch at Carrabba’s Italian Grill. What a beautiful way to spend a hot summer day!
Another artistic adventure brought residents to the Philadelphia Magic Gardens on South Street. They were greeted by an enthusiastic tour guide, who provided poignant insight into the artistic process and vision of the Magic Gardens. Spanning half a block, the museum includes an immersive outdoor art installation and indoor galleries. This immersive art space was created by Isaiah Zagar, who has devoted himself to beautifying the South Street neighborhood since the late 1960’s. He created the space using nontraditional materials such as bicycle wheels, colorful glass bottles, hand-made tiles, and thousands of glittering mirrors. His work can be seen all over the city of Philadelphia, but South Street is his home. Isaiah Zagar is an excellent example of what it means to thrive; at the age of 79 he is still creating and exploring his artistic identity and breaking new ground in the art world.
These are just two great examples of the various outings we take here at The Watermark at Logan Square. We are looking forward to another amazing month of programs and trips in August!
