From a garage in Manayunk, to Roxborough, then Kensington and finally to Northern Liberties, Yards has been brewing in the City of Brotherly Love since 1994. From their Pale Ale to the Love Stout, Brawler to the IPA, Yards beers have gained a reputation for their consistent and perfectly balanced flavors.
This May, residents of The Watermark were invited for a VIP tour of Yards Brewing Co. We were provided with a close and personal look at the production of their award-winning ales from the brew house to the bottling line from Mike, one of their resident tour guides. We were the inaugural tour able to view the fully operational brewery including the bottling line, which the company perfected earlier in the day! Mike was hilarious and provided a thorough background of the process of brewing in such a large scale facility. His off-color jokes had everyone laughing and he even explained the process of multiplying yeast akin to making babies. Apparently that explanation was enough to have him banned from career day at local schools! Mike strained his voice so that all were able to hear and we had lots of questions about the brewing process and Yards new location. We even were able to sample brews along the way!
After the tour, Garett and Tim ordered some tasty appetizers and a flight of Yards’ most interesting brews for the group. Garett led a beer tasting class in their large, open air tasting room that reminded us of a modern German beer hall with exposed ducts, long tables and concrete floors. We definitely enjoyed the ambiance of this hoppin’ new taproom and learned a lot in the process. We can’t wait to go back for a follow up trip and even have Yards staff members join us for a beer class in the future. All agreed that this beer road trip was a homerun at Yards Brewing Company!
